Unlike lotteries and sweepstakes, songwriting contests are not decided by luck or by chance. The top prizes – which can often include large cash grand prizes and/or a recording contract – are awarded to the writers of the winning songs, usually decided by a varied panel of qualified judges.

In most cases, songwriting contests are held annually, although a few of the bigger ones are held semi-annually.   The judging of each contest will vary from contest to contest, but most songwriting contests usually announce their winners 6 to 8 weeks after the entry deadline has passed.
